While I was listening to a podcast recently, I heard someone describe the idea that freedom enables creativity as a myth. It stayed with me. Perhaps because I had recently been hearing a similar idea about AI: that by removing the barriers to creation, it will give more people the freedom to express their creativity.
I think that is true, to an extent.
Freedom can absolutely enable creativity. Having the time, space, tools, and ability to pursue an idea matters. Removing unnecessary barriers can allow people to create things they otherwise might never have been able to.
But I am not convinced that freedom alone is enough.
When I have too many options, I often become indecisive. When I am free to do anything, it can become surprisingly easy to do nothing.
A problem gives you something to solve. A deadline gives you a reason to act. A limitation gives you something to work around. In each case, there is something to push against.
You cannot really move forward by pushing against nothing. Movement requires resistance. Maybe creativity is similar. Maybe we need something to respond to - Something to solve, Something to overcome, Something to push against.
This is where I find myself slightly sceptical of the idea that removing all barriers will automatically make people more creative. If everything is possible, choosing what to do can become its own problem.
When everything is possible, nothing is necessary.
I realise this may be a privileged thing to think about. I am fortunate enough to have a reasonable amount of freedom in my life. I have the luxury of wondering whether too much freedom can sometimes make it harder to create.
So this is not really an argument against freedom. I think freedom gives creativity space but I also think constraints give it direction. Maybe the most fertile ground for creativity is somewhere between the two: enough freedom to explore, but enough resistance to make exploration necessary.
I am still thinking about it.
But I am increasingly convinced that creativity does not come from freedom alone. Sometimes, the thing that forces us to create is the thing that gives us something to push against.
